What does this resource cover?
This series of workshops was developed by the Public Library Association and will help children and their parents/caregivers navigate the digital world and explore their own digital habits.
What will community members learn?
According to the included lesson plans, after learners complete this workshop series, they will be able to:
- Reflect on your digital habits and the different feelings that come with them
- Reflect on the places and times when it's important to be device- and distraction-free
- Explore strategies for how to achieve more balance around media and technology use
- Reflect on how you engage and interact with others online
- Identify what positive online communication and connections look and feel like
- Explore strategies for creating healthy relationships online and off
- Explain how online life can impact people's behavior
- Reflect on how cyberbullying and hate speech can impact you and others
- Explore strategies for how to respond to cyberbullying and online hate
- Explain the basics of data privacy and why it’s important to keep your personal information and devices safe
- Reflect on the concept of privacy, including what you feel comfortable sharing and with whom
- Identify strategies for protecting your privacy online
- Explain what constitutes news and the different ways you can access it
- Reflect on how we react to news and the impacts of those behaviors
- Explore strategies for finding credible news and being responsible for creators of online content
- Explain what a digital footprint is and how what you do online can impact both your own footprint and others
- Consider how you can use technology to advance your own interests, goals, and passions
- Identify different ways to use technology as a force for good in the world
How long will this program take?
90-120 minutes
Note: This is a six-part video series. You can design a workshop with one video with time for personal reflection and group discussion that approximately takes 15-30 minutes, depending on how much time you provide for individual reflection and group discussion. Thus, a class with 6 complete videos will last approximately 90-120 minutes.

In-person: Projector, projection screen, computer with Internet access for instructor
Virtual: A web conferencing platform, computers with Internet access for instructor, computer with Internet access for participants
